Venue Change
From 2012 the Dragon Ride will be based at Margam Park near Port Talbot, South Wales.
Margam Park is well used to holding major events such as the Wales Rally GB and British Championship Mountain Bike races. The park is located right alongside the M4 motorway and is close to the main line railway stations at Port Talbot and Pyle.
From riders feedback two main areas that will be improved are car parking and the start procedure. Car parking will be situated within the deer park only a few hundred metres from the start/finish area, the spacious eastern area of the park will accommodate a more expansive start facility in order to reduce waiting times for riders to get underway.
There are also several attractions on site for family members attending the ride such as the “Go Ape” zip wire, adventure playground, fantasy land and mountain bike hire.

Route
For 2012 the routes avoid the coastal section used this year and once again concentrate on the superb climbs South Wales has to offer. The Medio Fondo Ride will include the Cimla, Rhigos and Bwlch climbs as well other ascents. The Gran Fondo Route, will in addition to the above have one new major signature climb, The Black Mountain and the return of the "Hill With No Name" in the Brecon Beacons, an old favourite not included on the Dragon since 2007. The Corto Route is in effect a circuit of Margam Mountain.
There will be selective road closures along some sections of the route.
Details of the provisional course can be found on the Route page of this website
Promoted by Participate Sports and organised by BreakAway Events.
The event is intended for experienced cyclists, unlike shorter rides this is not a leisure ride and should only be attempted by reasonably fit and competent riders. The event takes place 3-4 weeks before the Tour of France Etape participation ride; the Dragon Ride offers the only compatible climbs in the southern UK, ideal as training for the Etape.
Mechanical support at the start and out on the course will be provided by the famous yellow Mavic service vehicles.
